Cardinal James Biffi wrote in one of his articles, "The Christian meaning of suffering":
For the current society, the sick person is a weight, an inconvenience, a burden. Instead, Christianity teaches the acceptance and the value of weakness and illness. The person who suffers, through their pain, shares in Christ's mysterious plan of redemption.
"...Ogni fisica decadenza é per la mentalità di questo secolo una vergogna ed una colpa. In un mondo che esalta i giovani ed i sani, invecchiare o ammalarsi appare una sventura, contro cui si deve lottare fino allo spasimo, e sembra altresì percepito come qualcosa di disonorevole, da nascondere alla vista altrui...E' quasi fatale che, almeno inavvertitamente, non solo la malattia, ma altrsì il malato sia sentito come peso, come guaio, come qualcuno che scompiglia i nostri progetti e ci guasta la bella festa della vita: é fatale che nasca nei suoi confronti un atteggiamento istintivo se non di ostilità, certo di mal dominato fastidio.
"...For the mentality of this century every physical loss is a disgrace and fault. In a world which exaltes youthfulness and healthiness to become old or sick sems to be a misfortune. For this reason, people seem to think it is necessary to fight these until death. People perceive old age and illness as something shameful which they need to hide from others.
Consequentaly, at least unintentionally, not only ilness but the sick person is considered a weight, a burden, someone that messes up our plans and spoils the party. Therefore, it's a logical consequence that people develop an instintive attitude of intolerance, if not open-hostility, towards the weaker members of society.
Colui che soffre cercando di fare la volontà di Dio é utile al prossimo. Anche se impedito nell'attività esterna, anche se isolato nella solitudine, egli irradia intorno a sé un'onda di luce spirituale a cui molti altri possono attingere.
The person who suffers seeking to do the will of God is useful to their neighbor. Even if they can't be involved in external activity, even if they are alone in their solitude, they still radiate a spiritual light and strength around themselves from which the rest of us can draw the same light and strength.
