Così scriveva il Papa Giovanni Paolo II:" Cristo non nascondeva ai propri acsoltatori la necessità della sofferenza. Molto chiaramente diceva:" se qualcuno vuol venire dietro a me,... prenda la sua croce ogni giorno", ed ai suoi discepoli poneva esigenze di natura morale, la cui realizzazione é possibile solo a condizione di " rinnegare se stessi". La via che porta al Regno dei cieli é " stretta ed angusta", e Cristo la contrappone alla via " larga e spaziosa", che peraltro " conduce alla perdizione". Diverse volte Cristo diceva anche che i suoi discepoli e confessori avrebbero incontrato molteplici persecuzioni, ciò che-come si sa- é avvenuto non solo nei primi secoli della vita della Chiesa sotto l'impero romano, ma si é avverato e si avvera in diversi periodi della storia e in diffrenti luoghi della terra, anche ai nostri tempi.
In his Apostolic Letter, "Salvifici Doloris", Pope John Paul II wrote, "Christ didn't hide from his listeners the necessity of suffering. " In fact, Jesus said very clearly: "If anyone would come after me.... take up your cross every day." And he put before his disciples the need of a spiritual logic and the value of denying themselves, of accepting suffering.
The road that leads to the Kingdom of heaven is "very narrow and difficult". Christ compared this road with that of the road which is "large and spacious"; however, this more comfortable way leads to spiritual death.
On a number of occasions, Christ reminded his disciples and followers that they would suffer many persecutions. And, in fact, this has happened - not only in the first centuries of the life of the Church under the Roman Empire - but persecutions has taken place in different periods in history and in different places, even in our own times.
